Whether you envision a dreamy seaside ceremony on the Greek islands or a romantic affair in the heart of Athens, this guide will walk you through the essential steps and considerations to make your elopement in Greece an unforgettable celebration of love.

Why Plan a Greece Elopement?

Greece, a mesmerizing country steeped in ancient history, stunning landscapes, and an air of romance, has become a coveted destination for couples seeking an intimate and unforgettable wedding experience. Stepping away from the traditional pomp and circumstance of elaborate ceremonies, eloping in Greece offers a unique opportunity to exchange vows against a backdrop of sun-drenched islands, cascading azure waters, and picturesque whitewashed villages.

From the enchanting allure of Santorini’s cliffside panoramas to the hidden treasures of Athens’ historical sites, Greece provides an idyllic setting for couples to embark on a magical journey together, surrounded by natural beauty and the essence of eternal love. Whether you dream of a secluded beach ceremony or a private ceremony overlooking ancient ruins, eloping in Greece promises to create cherished memories that will last a lifetime!

When to Elope in Greece

Choosing the ideal time of year to elope in Greece is crucial for ensuring a memorable and picturesque experience. Greece benefits from a Mediterranean climate, meaning mild winters and hot, sunny summers, making it a year-round destination.

However, the best time to elope in Greece is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm, with comfortable temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit (15-25 degrees Celsius).

The scorching heat and crowds of summer have not yet arrived or have started to dissipate, allowing you to enjoy quieter venues and more intimate moments. The landscape is lush and vibrant, adorned with blooming flowers in spring and picturesque autumn foliage.

Whether you choose the blossoming islands of Santorini and Mykonos or the historical marvels of Athens, eloping in Greece during the shoulder seasons offers a perfect balance of comfortable weather, fewer tourists, and stunning natural beauty, ensuring an unforgettable celebration of your love.

Planning Your Greece Elopement

RESEARCH + PERMITS

Before eloping in Greece, conducting thorough research and obtaining the necessary permits is crucial to ensure a seamless and hassle-free experience. Start by researching the specific location in Greece where you plan to elope, whether it’s Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, or any other destination. Understand the local regulations, permit requirements, and any restrictions related to elopements or ceremonies in public spaces. It is essential to contact the local municipality or a wedding planner in Greece to inquire about the permits needed for your chosen venue and to understand the application process, timelines, and associated fees. By investing time in research and obtaining the appropriate permits, you can ensure that your elopement in Greece adheres to the legal requirements and guidelines, allowing you to focus on creating beautiful memories on your special day.

WHAT TO WEAR WHEN ELOPING IN GREECE

When eloping in Greece, selecting the perfect attire can complement the enchanting surroundings and create a memorable look for your special day. Consider the location and season when choosing your outfit. For a beach elopement, opt for lightweight and flowy fabrics like chiffon or linen in soft colors that reflect the coastal ambiance. For a city elopement, you may lean towards a more sophisticated and elegant ensemble, such as a tailored suit for the groom and a chic cocktail dress or a flowing gown for the bride. Embrace the classic Greek aesthetic by incorporating elements like draping, Grecian-inspired silhouettes, or delicate lace. Don’t forget to bring comfortable footwear, especially if there will be walking involved. Accessorize with minimalistic jewelry and consider a floral crown or a fresh flower bouquet to enhance the romantic ambiance. Ultimately, choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable, and aligns with the stunning Greek backdrop for your elopement.

CHOOSING A CEREMONY LOCATION

Choosing the perfect ceremony location when eloping in Greece is a key decision that sets the tone for your special day. Consider several factors to make an informed choice. Firstly, think about the atmosphere you desire. Do you envision a beach wedding with soft sands and crashing waves or a historic venue with ancient ruins as your backdrop? Secondly, take into account the level of privacy and intimacy you desire. Some couples may prefer secluded spots, while others may enjoy a more vibrant and public setting. Additionally, consider the logistics and accessibility of the location, especially if you have guests attending. Lastly, take inspiration from the unique beauty of Greece, such as its breathtaking islands, stunning coastal cliffs, or historic landmarks. By considering these factors and aligning your preferences with the natural and architectural wonders of Greece, you can choose a ceremony location that captures the essence of your love and creates lasting memories!

OFFICIANT + WITNESSES

Ensure you have a licensed officiant to perform the ceremony. Also, in Greece, at least two witnesses are required (one being a translator) for a legal marriage, so plan accordingly.

ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHERS AND VENDORS

To capture the essence of your special day, it’s crucial to find professional elopement photographers (like me!) and vendors who are familiar with your elopement spot in Greece and specific lighting conditions. Experienced photographers will beautifully preserve the magic of your elopement, ensuring that every precious moment is perfectly documented.

How Much Does It Cost to Elope In Greece?

The cost of eloping in Greece can vary depending on several factors, including the location, the level of customization, and the services you choose. On average, eloping in Greece can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. The main expenses to consider include travel and accommodation, ceremony venue fees or permits, legal documentation, photography/videography services, floral arrangements, attire, transportation, and any additional services like hair and makeup or a celebrant. It is essential to set a budget and prioritize your spending based on what is most important to you. Working with a local wedding planner or coordinator can help streamline the process and ensure that you stay within your budget while creating a memorable elopement experience in Greece.
